The Church has always cherry-picked those scriptures that suit their doctrinal narrative. They espouse the concept of human exceptionalism found in the creation texts, the ones that permit us to eat whatever we want. And yet there is extensive evidence that meat-eating was a hot topic in the early Jesus movement.
In Thomas we journey to a territory far beyond human exceptionalism to a realms that recognises that all lives are worthy of ethical consideration. We do not recognise animals as mere things, possessed of no purpose, and possesed of no claim on the justice and forebearance of human society.
Everything is the Living One
The Living One embraces all creatures and all forms, for everything is the Divine. There is nothing that is not. In Thomas we have a Jesus who stands with and for the animals, for the environment, and for us. sacred.
