There are a number of pointers to Thomas having been written in the late first century. The honorific titles Jesus enjoys in the Gospel of John are not referenced in Thomas suggesting that the author was unfamiliar with such terminology. Where there are parallels to the synoptic gospels then the Thomas version tends to be more succinct and less elaborate suggesting that the content has not been embellished. Marvin Meyer suggests that collections of sayings like Thomas are a characteristic of the first century. Elaine Pagels, perhaps the foremost Thomas academic, suggests that Thomas was written either in the late first century or early in the second.
