In Thomas Jesus asks us to know ourselves in a different way and to retrieve a lost self. Think of it as a game of hide and seek where the game is played inside ourselves.
We are each herded into ways of thinking that belie our true nature. From the moment of our arrival we are sheep dipped into the cultural norms of the society into which we are born. And yet Jesus confirms we each have a self, a forgotten self, that understands how things really are. The challenge of Thomas is to negotiate the paradox and ambiguities of the sayings and to rediscover this forgotten self.
