Vegetarian Factions
The Church has always cherry-picked those scriptures that best suit their doctrinal narrative. They espouse the concept of human exceptionalism found in the creation texts, the ones that tell us humans are the only creatures made in God's image. The ones that permit us to eat whatever we want, and to treat the earth like a commodity.
And yet meat-eating was a hot topic in the 1st century Jesus movement. In Thomas Jesus is on the side of the animals. He journeys far beyond human exceptionalism to a realm that recognises that all lives are worthy of ethical consideration. In Unitivism animals are not recognised as mere things, possessed of no purpose, and possessed of no claim on the justice and forebearance of human society.
