Why isn't Thomas in the Bible?

The early Jesus movement was factionalised and there were varying stories regarding who and what Jesus was. Once Athanasius made his declaration then gospels like Thomas were immediately outlawed. That there were alternative gospels was confirmed by Orthodox champions like Bishop Irenaeus who spent their whole lives dismissing and undermining the viewpoints that the alternative gospels expressed. From an orthodox perspective this made complete sense as the church strived for doctrinal consistency. There will have been those who recognised that the Thomas message of unity and Oneness, was completely inconsistent with the Orthodox idea of God being 'wholly other'. Elaine Pagels suggests that the Gospel of John was actually written as a doctrinal rebuttal of Thomas. Orthodoxy ultimately prevailed because it was well organised, had clearly defined rituals, and a clear theological position.
